POL021 | 1 June 2023

Definition

A polygraph test, popularly referred to as a lie detector, measures and records several physiological indices such as blood pressure, pulse, respiration, and skin conductivity while the subject is asked and answers a series of questions.

Purpose

Due to an increase in fraud, theft and robberies in the company lately, it has become necessary to implement the use of polygraphs for scanning of current and new employees when needed.

The aim of this policy is to ensure the safety of all employees, workers, and visitors by conducting random polygraph tests at random times or whenever there is fraud, theft, robberies or any other irregularities.

Scope

The Company's Polygraph testing policy applies to all employees

The rules laid out in this policy apply to all employees, workers and contractors.

Random polygraph tests will be done on all employees at any given time.

The company will maintain a zero deception rule for all employees when polygraphed.

Rules

The Company’s policy is that management has the right to submit any employee at any given time for a polygraph test. This will help to ensure the safety of employees and others as well as protect the company against ongoing fraud, possible fraud, theft or robberies. For those reasons, the following rules will be strictly enforced.

  1. It is compulsory for all employees to read and sign the attached addendum to contract for polygraph testing

  2. In case of fraud, alleged fraud, robberies or any other irregularities, all employees involved, suspected to be involved, or working in the specific branch or department, will undergo a polygraph test.

  3. When there is reasonable belief that an individual is partaking or has knowledge of any illegal actions, the employee will be submitted to a polygraph test.

Disciplinary Action

As all employees are aware of the company policy of a ZERO deception result when undergoing a polygraph test, the following actions will be taken, should an employee failed a polygraph test:

  1. Disciplinary hearing will be conducted when an employee fails a polygraph, as a failed test will result in breach of contract as well as breach of trust between employer and employee.

  2. Should the failed polygraph confirm any suspicion or proof of irregularities, it will be seen as a Class One (very serious) offence, and could lead to dismissal.
