Reason for Memorandum:
Introduction
This memorandum aims to inform all employees about the necessary precautions and preventive measures to mitigate the risk of Monkeypox in our workplace. The primary focus will be on recognizing symptoms, understanding the timeline of the infection, how it spreads, and implementing effective protection strategies, including the use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and proper sanitizing practices. Only 5 (five) cases have been reported in South Africa so far, with one resulting in death. We therefore urge everyone to be educated and careful regarding this issue.
Monkeypox Overview
Monkeypox is a viral infection that can present symptoms similar to the flu before a visible rash develops.
Key points to be aware of include:
Symptoms:
• Flu-like symptoms before a rash appears.
• Fever, exhaustion, muscle aches, headache, and respiratory issues.
Timeline:
• Symptoms may appear up to 3 weeks after exposure to the virus.
• Flu-like symptoms are followed by the development of a rash 1 to 4 days later.
Modes of Transmission:
• Direct skin contact.
• Close physical contact, such as hugging and kissing.
• Contact with contaminated fabrics, bedding, and towels.
Preventive Measures
To protect yourself and others, the following preventive measures should be strictly adhered to:
1. Personal Protective Equipment (PPE):
• Always wear appropriate PPE when in close contact with others, especially if symptoms are suspected. PPE includes masks, gloves, and, if necessary, face shields and gowns.
2. Avoid Skin-to-Skin Contact:
• Refrain from direct physical contact with individuals who may be infected.
• Maintain a safe distance from anyone exhibiting symptoms.
3. Avoid Contact with Contaminated Materials:
• Do not touch fabrics, bedding, towels, or any materials that may have been handled by a person with Monkeypox. Ensure that any shared materials are sanitized regularly.
4. Hand Hygiene:
• Wash your hands frequently with soap and water for at least 20 seconds.
• Use hand sanitizer with at least 60% alcohol when soap and water are not available.
5. Sanitizing Workstations:
• Regularly clean and disinfect your work area, including desks, keyboards, and other
frequently touched surfaces. Use approved disinfectants effective against Monkeypox.
Conclusion
By following these guidelines and maintaining vigilance, we can significantly reduce the risk of Monkeypox transmission in our workplace. Your cooperation is essential in ensuring a safe and healthy environment for everyone.
For any questions or further information, please do not hesitate to contact the HR department.
Thank you for your attention and adherence to these important preventive measures.
